a little about me
My name is Patricia Coughlin and my paintings reflect my personality - both are a study in contrasts.
These works are bold and dynamic, yet serene; vibrant and neutral; busy yet peaceful; and abstract with hints of the representational. I hope they move and inspire you.

In these very dark days it is easy to sink into rage and despair. I refuse to go down that rabbit hole and have experienced a surge of joy and creativity resulting in paintings the likes of which I have never made before. One of the things I love about painting is that I meet my unconscious on the canvas. Where did that come from? Obviously, from the deepest part of me!
As the historian Heather Cox Richardson reminds us, authoritarians can only dominate when the population is stuck in rage and despair. Doing what we do, and contributing what we can, from a place of joy and love is an act of defiance. In fact, this series is called "defying the darkness." Dictators can not rule when citizens have strong community ties and experience joy. So join the resistance and come from a place of love and joy in your life.
This all started with the first painting of the year, called "Begin Again." I was allowing myself to have "do overs," painting over failed paintings and creating something new. These bold florals have emerged. Two of them are 4’ x 4’ and the smallest is 20" x 20" - I hope they bring you joy and hope.
